Pain clinic is an interdisciplinary branch of medicine that employs an interdisciplinary approach in treating the pain of patients and enhancing their quality of life. The most common form of pain clinic treatment is medical oncology or pain management. However, in recent times more innovative medical interventions are also being used as pain clinics.

A pain clinic can be considered a specialised medical treatment facility. It has a dedicated team of doctors, nurses and therapists that work together to provide effective pain management and pain relief. In many cases, the aim of a pain clinic is not only to treat pain but also to improve patient health and reduce risks associated with chronic pain. Pain relieving medication is usually the first line of treatment for pain in both acute and chronic forms. This includes medicines like analgesics and muscle relaxants.

Pain relieving medication can be grouped into two categories, namely, topical and injection. Topical pain medications include pain relievers such as aspirin and ibuprofen; and analgesics such as acetaminophen and codeine. Both these categories are effective for mild and moderate pain. Pain medications are generally applied to the site from where the pain began, such as a pinched nerve. However, they may also be taken orally.

Injectable pain relievers such as pentasa and hydrocodone can be injected directly into a painful area of the body. They are fast acting and have a strong effect. They are also known to provide long lasting pain relief. However, they carry a lot of side effects, including drowsiness, nausea and vomiting. Moreover, there is also a risk of infection, especially if the injections contain steroids. Other forms of pain medication are topical creams and ointments. For severe pain, these may be used as well.

There are other types of pain relief medications which may also be used in conjunction with pain relievers. They include antidepressants such as benzodiazepines, which are used to relieve pain caused by depression or anxiety, anti-seizure drugs and anti-inflammatory medications.

Pain clinics have several advantages. The most important advantage is that they do not have the same kind of side effects as other types of pain relieving medication. Since pain is not curable, it is not necessary to administer expensive medicines that can be dangerous to the patient.

Another advantage of visiting a pain clinic is that you will have the chance to interact with specialists. This will help you understand your pain better, as you will have somebody to talk to who is trained in pain management. You will also be treated with compassion and respect.

Pain is a very personal experience. If you suffer from a condition that makes you suffer more than others, you may be embarrassed to go see your doctor and speak to him or her about it. However, if you go to a pain clinic, you will know that you have someone there who understands your problem and can give you the kind of support that you need.
